Pushing 5-foot-10 and 170lbs, Caleb Bishop is no pushover at defensive back. He showed great promise as a junior, earning All-Metro Honorable mention at defensive back. His technique, aggression, and 4.5 dash speed help him compete at a high level.
What sets him apart from his peers is his drive mechanics, enabling rapid changes of direction and a knack for getting to the ball before anyone else. Bishop excels at disrupting 50/50 balls when matched up against larger receivers. In his backpedal he is relatively smooth in his backpedal for someone still growing and developing as a defensive back. His ability to open his hips while still gaining depth lets him easily stay in sync with the receiver. There have been plays where Bishop overplayed the ball yet recovered from the missteps to save a potential touchdown.
For secondary players, the ability to kick into your second-level burst is valuable to setting up quarterbacks for interceptions. In an era where offensive coordinators have known problems, air it all over the field. Bishop’s versatility to play press and off-man coverage helps the Monarchs secondary.
Despite not being the most physically imposing prospect at first glance due to their lean physique, he is a reliable tackler who doesn’t hesitate to step up and make a play in open-field situations. As a “tweener”, Bishop will have to put on more weight to compete at the Division I level. However, his frame is well suited to play defensive back at the Division II level and be successful. To become a promising candidate at the Division I FCS level as a coverage specialist, he will need to put on 15 to 20 pounds so that he can handle assignments on both the inside and outside at defensive back.
