Andrew “AJ” Gary Jr. isn’t just building a football résumé; he’s building a foundation.
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA — At 6-foot, 256 pounds, the Class of 2027 offensive lineman from Huguenot High School has quietly developed into a steady presence in the trenches, combining physicality, discipline, and a team-first mindset that continues to shape his growth on the field. Gary’s journey began in 2020 with the Central Virginia Hurricanes, where he first learned the fundamentals of the game at center. It was there that the groundwork was laid — not just in technique, but in accountability, consistency, and understanding what it means to be part of a team. That early development translated quickly to the high school level.
As a freshman, Gary was part of a dominant Huguenot squad that finished 10–0, captured the Dominion District Championship, and averaged an eye-popping 55 points per game. Surrounded by a high-powered offense, he learned the value of doing his job every play, a trait that has become a staple of his game. The success continued into his sophomore season, where Gary stepped into a larger role along the offensive line. Focused on improving his strength, snapping accuracy, and blocking assignments, he became a more complete player in the middle of the line. Once again, Huguenot finished 10–0 and repeated as district champions, reinforcing a culture of consistency and execution. But it’s his junior year where Gary’s development has taken a noticeable leap.
Now anchoring the line at the center while also contributing as a long snapper, Gary has embraced the responsibility that comes with controlling the line of scrimmage. From calling protections to ensuring offensive rhythm, his role extends beyond physical play; it’s about leadership and trust.

“I take pride in making sure everything runs smoothly,” Gary has emphasized through his approach on the field, a mindset reflected in his preparation and performance. That leadership has also extended beyond game day.
With Huguenot implementing a mentorship program, Gary has taken on the role of guiding younger players, helping them adjust to the program’s demands while setting the standard through his work ethic and accountability. It’s a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly, and one that continues to shape his identity as a leader. On the field, his focus has been clear: improve explosiveness off the ball, refine technique, and bring a physical edge every snap. Off the field, it’s about consistency and growth.
Looking ahead, Gary’s senior year will be about putting it all together. With aspirations of playing at the next level, he’s focused on proving he has the complete package: strength, discipline, football IQ, and leadership. More importantly, he’s determined to help lead his team back into championship contention. In a game often defined by skill positions and highlight plays, Gary represents something different: the reliability, toughness, and mindset that keep an offense moving.
