on

In a football landscape where development and exposure are more critical than ever, few coaches embody both at an elite level as Richard Johnson does. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Johnson’s journey began at Milford Mill Academy, where his foundation in discipline and competitiveness first took shape. That same drive carried him to the collegiate level at Virginia Tech, one of the nation’s premier football programs,  and it didn’t take long for him to make his mark.

As a freshman, Johnson earned All-Big East Freshman Team honors, setting the tone for a career defined by leadership and production. He would go on to become a team captain, breaking records and establishing himself as one of the program’s most impactful players. But Johnson’s football story didn’t end in Blacksburg; it evolved.

A Champion at the Professional Level

Taking his talents to the professional ranks, Johnson carved out a dominant career in Arena Football, where winning became the standard.

  • 🏆 3× Arena Bowl Champion
  • ⭐ 4× All-Star Selection
  • 👑 League MVP & Team Captain

His ability to lead, perform under pressure, and consistently deliver at a high level defined his professional career, traits that now shape his coaching philosophy.

Developing Athletes Beyond the Game

Today, Johnson is channeling that same championship mindset into the next generation. As the Assistant Quarterbacks Coach and Special Teams Coordinator (Kickoff & Punt Return) at Howard University, he plays a key role in developing athletes both mentally and physically.

His coaching résumé also includes impactful stops at:

  • McDaniel College (Secondary & Wide Receivers)
  • Milford Mill Academy (High School Development)

Across every level, Johnson has helped:

  • Lead teams to state championships
  • Develop athletes into Division I prospects
  • Build systems focused on discipline, execution, and accountability

More Than a Coach – A Mentor

What separates Johnson isn’t just his résumé; it’s his mission. Armed with a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching and Learning (Secondary Education), he brings an educator’s mindset to coaching, emphasizing growth in the classroom just as much as on the field.

His commitment to the community runs deep:

  • Organizing camps featuring former and current NFL players
  • Partnering with the Baltimore Ravens “Play Like a Raven” program
  • Mentoring inner-city youth through football and life development

Building the Next Generation

In an era when recruiting is evolving, and athletes must take ownership of their exposure, Johnson stands at the forefront, preparing players not just to compete but to succeed in the long term.

Through coaching, training, and mentorship, he continues to shape athletes into:

  • Better competitors
  • Stronger individuals
  • Future leaders

 The Standard

Richard Johnson isn’t just teaching football. He’s building a culture. A culture rooted in discipline, resilience, and championship expectations, the same principles that carried him from Baltimore to the highest levels of the game. And now, he’s passing that legacy forward.
