Northwest Jaguars Takes Not Prisoners As They Seek To Dominate Maryland Football Again!
Northwest’s 2-0 season start looks promising after defeat Damacus to make a statement to Maryland’s public school elite programs!
After a disappointing and tumultuous season last fall, Northwest High School appears to have risen from the ashes. The Jaguars, once considered a powerhouse in the state, stumbled to a 5-6 record in 2022, marking their first losing season in over a decade. However, 2023 has brought a rejuvenated spirit to Northwest High, as they stand tall with a promising 2-0 start, including a jaw-dropping 47-14 victory over the reigning Class 3A state champions Damascus this past weekend.
The triumph against Damascus was not merely a win but a statement. A statement that Northwest High School had rekindled its winning culture and was ready to reclaim its position as one of Maryland’s elite public school football squads. What made this victory all the more remarkable was the sweet taste of revenge it carried. It avenged a heartbreaking 34-28 loss to Damascus in the 2022 regular season opener, a defeat that undoubtedly lingered in the minds of the Jaguars throughout the off-season.
The transformation from a turbulent 2022 season to a dominant 2023 start is extraordinary. Last year’s turmoil was epitomized by a mid-season brawl with league rival Gaithersburg in Week 3, which stained the program’s reputation. In the aftermath of the brawl, the entire Jaguars coaching staff and Gaithersburg’s athletic director were relieved of their duties by the Montgomery County school system, signaling a need for change and accountability.
The adversity of 2022 was a catalyst for the transformation we’re witnessing this season. The coaching staff has implemented a renewed focus on discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork, not just on the field but also in the broader context of life. The players, too, have demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination, turning their disappointment from last year into motivation for this season’s resurgence.
- QB – David Davis
- ATH – Tony Berry
- EDGE – Christian Idoma
In their 2023 campaign, the Jaguars have displayed an explosive offense and a tenacious defense, combining to make them a force to be reckoned with. Junior quarterback David Davis has been a standout performer, showcasing poise and precision in the passing game. He has emerged as a dynamic playmaker, accounting for an impressive 334 yards and six touchdowns in just two games. His ability to make precise throws and smart decisions has provided a much-needed spark to the Jaguars’ offense.
Senior Tony Berry, a versatile athlete, has been a key contributor, averaging 150 all-purpose yards in the opening games. Berry’s ability to make plays both as a receiver and in the return game has added a new dimension to Northwest’s attack. Defensively, the Jaguars are led by senior linebacker Christian Idoma, a tackling machine with 14 tackles early in the season. Idoma’s leadership on and off the field has set the tone for a defense determined to make its mark.
Northwest High School, a program with a storied history that includes back-to-back 4A state titles in 2013 and 2014, is again on the rise. The Jaguars have their sights set on challenging the two-time reigning 4A champion, Quince Orchard, in Montgomery County. Notably, Northwest is the last team to defeat Quince Orchard, a juggernaut that has reigned supreme with an astonishing 30 consecutive victories and 42 wins in 43 games since 2019. While it’s still early in the season, Northwest High School’s resurgence is sending shockwaves through Maryland’s high school football landscape. With each game, the Jaguars are inching closer to their ultimate goal: adding another chapter to their storied history with a return to the pinnacle of Maryland high school football.
