DJ Kennard’s Journey As Under Recruited Athlete: From Falls Church High School to Michigan State Commit
DJ Kennard’s football journey has been a testament to resilience, determination, and the pursuit of dreams. Hailing from Bel Air, Maryland, Kennard spent most of his high school years in Falls Church, Virginia, showcasing his skills as a versatile athlete at Falls Church High School on the football and basketball court. A standout receiver and defensive back, Kennard faced the challenges of COVID-19, which disrupted his opportunities and led him to take a unique path to pursue his college football dreams.
When the pandemic altered the college recruitment landscape, Kennard decided to attend Palmetto Prep in South Carolina after high school. Despite the setbacks, he continued to display his prowess on the field, playing cornerback and free safety during his post-graduate year at Palmetto Prep Academy in 2023. The Minutemen’s perfect 8-0 record attested to Kennard’s impact on the team. Michigan State recognized Kennard’s potential and dedication, offering him a preferred walk-on spot for the 2024 season. Opting to enroll in January, Kennard seized the opportunity to train and practice with the team before the Spring Season, positioning himself to earn an athletic scholarship.
Kennard’s unique journey caught the attention of multiple colleges, including Virginia Tech University, James Madison University, Old Dominion University, Morgan State University, Hampton University, and East Carolina. However, Kennard’s heart was set on Michigan State, citing his belief in the program, love for the atmosphere, and admiration for the fan base.
His former Falls Church coach, Franklin Weaver, attests to Kennard’s exceptional character and spirit, emphasizing his respect and admiration for this under-recruited athlete. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 195 pounds, Kennard embodies the attributes of a successful college athlete not only in terms of athleticism but also academically and as an outstanding individual. As Kennard embarks on his collegiate football journey at Michigan State, the URA Football Show celebrates his commitment and eagerly anticipates seeing him on the field. His journey is one in which we had the opportunity to be a part firsthand and witness the character and determination of this young man. Kennard’s story inspires athletes to navigate the challenges of the recruiting process, reminding them that commitment and focus can pave the way to realizing their dreams.
We look forward to catching up with him this summer to bring you an exclusive interview about life at Michigan State and how much of a mental and physical transition it is going from high school to a Power Five program.
