Northwest ends 39-game winning streak of Quince Orchard with 29-26 win
The showdown between Northwest and Quince Orchard in high school football was just as promised; it was exciting and hard-fought between the two 4A heavy hitters. These two titans of the game brought their A-game to the field, setting the stage for an electrifying matchup that had fans on the edge of their seats.
Trailing by ten early in the second quarter against Northwest High School, Quince Orchard Cougar’s night was full of turnovers and unexpected big plays from the Jaguars. Northwest defensive lineman Xavier Rivas came up with the interception. He excitedly scampered to the end zone to put the Jaguars up 17 points, sending the away team sideline and student section into a frenzy. The Jaguars held a 15-12 lead after the first quarter. On the first play of the second quarter, the Jaguars, on the verge of extending their lead, fumbled. On the next play, Northwest forced a fumble of its own.
Northwest maintained their lead into the second half, winning 29-26 over Quince Orchard in the MPSSAA 4A State Playoffs. Just weeks earlier, the Jaguars lost at home to the Cougars. Northwest’s win finally halted Quince Orchard’s impressive 39-game winning streak that dated back to 2019.
Despite Quince Orchard’s late comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to three points, Northwest secured the win by recovering an onside kick and running out the clock.
Northwest’s sophomore quarterback, Jayden Vongprachanh-Nelson, was a significant factor in amassing 237 yards and two touchdowns despite throwing two interceptions. The multiple turnovers in the first half and the loss of Penn State commit star defensive end Jaylen Harvey suffered an injury that required an ambulance in the third quarter. It did not help the Cougar’s situation, putting them on defense the entire second half.
The victory for Northwest paves their way to face the Broadneck Bruins in Annapolis in the third round of the playoffs, marking their continued pursuit of a state title after defeating the top-ranked team in the 4A bracket.
