Top 2025 California High School Running Back to Watch

California’s Class of 2025 is stacked with elite high school running backs making waves with speed, power, and vision. These athletes have been dominating defenses, showcasing breakaway speed, explosive cuts, and the ability to rack up yards after contact. Many have drawn interest from top college programs nationwide, with scholarship offers pouring in from Pac-12, Big Ten, and SEC schools. Whether it’s a power runner who thrives between the tackles or a dynamic playmaker with elite agility in open space, these backs are proving they have what it takes to succeed at the next level. Here are some defensive backs to keep an eye on:

                                                                                                                       Wes Burford — Oakdale High School                                                          Wes Burford has distinguished himself as a dual-sport athlete, excelling in football and wrestling. Burford delivered outstanding performance amassing 2,678 rushing yards, averaging 7.4 yards per carry, and scored 32 rushing touchdowns. His consistent performance has positioned him among the top running backs in the state, ranking fourth in California for rushing yards and second in the Sac-Joaquin Section for multiple statistical categories.

 

                                                                                                                      Dathen Moore – Lassen High School                                                             Dathen Moore has established himself as a standout running back, delivering remarkable performances throughout the 2024 football season. In a dominant 55-0 victory over Central Valley High School, Moore showcased his efficiency by rushing for 102 yards on just six carries, averaging an impressive 17 yards per carry. During the playoff game against Live Oak High School, Moore continued his stellar performance with 131 rushing yards on four carries, averaging 32.8 yards per carry, contributing significantly to Lassen’s 42-13 win. He ended his junior season amassing 2,492 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns.

                                                                                                              Nathan Gonzales – Mira Monte High School                                         Nathan Gonzales has established himself as a standout running back, amassing 2,369 rushing yards over 13 games, averaging approximately 182.2 yards per game.  He scored 26 rushing touchdowns, leading the team in total touchdowns for the season. In a match against Minarets High School, Gonzales rushed for a career-high 334 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 8.0 yards per carry. Gonzales ended his junior season with 2,522 all-purpose yards, averaging approximately 168.1 yards per game and 26 rushing touchdowns.

                                                                                                                 Journee Tonga – Leuzinger High School                                                       Journee Tonga is one of the state’s top running backs. Standing at 5’8″ and 170 pounds, he rushed for 2,267 yards and 36 touchdowns in the 2024 season. Notable performances include a 269-yard game against Mira Costa and a 56-0 win over Lawndale, where he averaged 22.8 yards per carry. Even in a tough loss to Los Alamitos, Tonga racked up 251 yards on 30 carries. He also contributes as a free safety, showcasing his versatility.

 

                                                                                                               Luke Schager – Orland High School                                                    Luke Schager has quickly gained attention for his exceptional skills on the field. As the team’s starting quarterback, he has rushed for 2,239 yards and 27 touchdowns in the 2024 season, showcasing his versatility as a dual-threat. His ability to make plays with his legs, speed, and vision have made him a constant threat in both designed runs and scramble situations. In addition to his rushing prowess, he has made him one of the top rushers and highly productive athletes.

 

                                                                                                              Jace Demacabalin – Kennedy High School                                                Jace Demacabalin, a standout athlete at Kennedy High School, has become one of the most exciting players to watch in his class. Known for his explosive speed and playmaking ability, Demacabalin has excelled as a rusher amassing 2,077 yards and 24. touchdowns. He uses his size and athleticism to dominate matchups, consistently making highlight-reel runs and receptions that showcase his dominance.

 

 

                                                                                                                   Jhadis Luckey – California High School                                             Jhadis Luckey, a dynamic athlete at California High School, has quickly made a name for himself as one of the top playmakers in the region. As a versatile running back with exceptional speed, agility, and football IQ, Luckey has been a dominant force on offense. In the 2024 season, he rushed for 2,053 yards and 33 touchdowns, leading his team in both categories and solidifying his reputation as a standout player.
