DOVER, Del. – Delaware State University has announced DeSean Jackson as its new head football coach in a move that continues the trend of former NFL stars transitioning to college coaching. The decision, revealed on Dec. 27, places Jackson at the forefront of efforts to revitalize the Hornets’ football program after a challenging 1-11 season.

Jackson, a three-time Pro Bowler and one of the most electrifying wide receivers in NFL history joins a growing list of NFL alumni who are turning their attention to HBCU programs. The announcement follows Norfolk State’s recent hiring of Michael Vick as head coach, signaling a shift in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) toward attracting big-name talent with professional experience.

A Perfect Fit for Delaware State

Athletic director Tony Tucker called Jackson “a perfect fit” for the university, emphasizing his competitiveness and vision. “DeSean Jackson embodies the values we hold dear at DSU—mentorship, discipline, and a student-first philosophy,” Tucker said. “He brings an unmatched energy and optimism to our campus.”

Jackson expressed excitement about the opportunity, describing it as a natural progression in his journey. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment for me,” he said. “I found my path to manhood through mentorship, accountability, and achievement. Now, I have the chance to help build that same culture at Delaware State University, attracting the right talent and reshaping the trajectory of this program.”

A Legacy of Excellence

Jackson’s NFL career spans 15 seasons with teams including the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders, and Baltimore Ravens. Known for his speed and playmaking ability, he holds NFL records for most 60+ and 80+ yard touchdown receptions and concluded his playing career as an Eagle in December 2023. A Los Angeles native and University of California, Berkeley alumnus, Jackson now aims to bring that same dynamism to Delaware State.

His connection to the university runs deep. John Taylor, a three-time Super Bowl champion and DSU alumnus, is Jackson’s uncle and voiced his confidence in the new coach. “DeSean has played for some of the best coaches in football,” Taylor said. “His leadership and vision will undoubtedly bring fresh energy and opportunities for growth.”

Following in Prime Time’s Footsteps

Deion Sanders ‘ groundbreaking tenure at Jackson State catalyzed the rise of former NFL players in HBCU coaching. Sanders transformed the Tigers into an HBCU powerhouse, drawing national attention to the program before moving on to Colorado. Eddie George followed suit at Tennessee State, leading the team to an FCS playoff berth in 2024. Jackson aims to continue this legacy of success at Delaware State.

The Hornets face significant challenges, coming off a season in which they were outscored 408-212, including two shutout losses. However, Jackson’s extensive NFL experience and mentorship under coaches like Andy Reid and John Harbaugh have prepared him for the task ahead. Reid, who coached Jackson in Philadelphia, offered high praise. “DeSean is like a son to me,” Reid said. “He’s a fierce competitor and a quality leader. I’m confident he’ll thrive at DSU.”

A New Chapter for HBCU Football

Jackson’s hire underscores the evolving role of HBCUs in the college football landscape. Once the exclusive pipeline for Black athletes is in place before integration, HBCUs are reclaiming their influence through high-profile hires and increased media coverage. Jackson emphasized that this legacy is ongoing. “HBCUs have always been at the forefront of representation in America,” he said. “This story isn’t just history—it’s happening now.”

Delaware State will formally introduce Jackson at a press conference on Jan. 8, 2025. The announcement has already sparked widespread attention, with Amazon Prime set to release a documentary about Jackson’s life in fall 2025.

For Delaware State and DeSean Jackson, this partnership marks the beginning of a promising chapter, one where the electrifying energy Jackson brought to the gridiron might now light up the sidelines. As the Hornets look to rebuild, their new leader is ready to inspire the next generation of student-athletes and elevate HBCU football to greater heights.
