Top 2025 New York High School Running Backs to Watch

The Class of 2025 is bringing a wave of exceptional running backs from New York who are expected to impact the field significantly. These players showcase a mix of speed, agility, and vision that sets them apart. With the ability to break tackles and accelerate through defenses, they are versatile athletes who can dominate both in the open field and in short-yardage situations. Their strong football IQ and ability to read the game allow them to make quick decisions, creating big plays when it matters most. As they continue to develop their skills, these rising stars will be the ones to watch in the coming years. Here are some athletes to keep an eye on:                                       

                                                                                                            Ja’Quan Thomas – William Ford High School                                   Ja’Quan Thomas is a dynamic running back known for his impressive football performance. Standing at 6’0″ and weighing 190 pounds, he combines size, speed, and agility to become a constant threat to opposing defenses. In the previous season, Ja’Quan rushed for over 2500 yards,  and scored 37 touchdowns. His ability to break tackles and accelerate through gaps has made him one of the top running backs in his region. Additionally, he contributed in the passing game, hauling in 250 yards and three touchdowns. With his mix of athleticism and football intelligence, Ja’Quan Thomas is a rising star, and his continued growth could see him make a significant impact at the next level.

                                                                                                           Elijah Kimble – Canisius High School                                                  Elijah Kimble has rapidly distinguished himself as a formidable football player. Standing at 5’10” and weighing 180 pounds, Kimble’s blend of agility and power has been pivotal in his team’s recent successes. In his sophomore year (2024), Kimble amassed 1,778 rushing yards and scored 31 touchdowns, leading Canisius to a 9-3 record and securing the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association championship and The Buffalo News Large School Poll Championship. His performance earned him the prestigious Dick Gallagher Buffalo News Player of the Year award.

 

                                                                                                                    Jordan Bishop – Hamburg High School                                          Jordan Bishop has emerged as a key player in the 2024 high school football season. At 5’9″ and 185 pounds, Bishop’s combination of agility and strength has been instrumental in his team’s offensive success. Bishop accumulated 1,765 rushing yards throughout the season, scoring 17 touchdowns, leading his team and Section 9 in these categories.  His standout performances include a 291-yard, three-touchdown game against Warwick, where he averaged 10 yards per carry.  Additionally, he set a season-high with 190 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries in a game against Wallkill.

 

                                                                                                              Travis Gamble – Randolph Campus High School                          Travis Gamble has been a standout running back for the Cougars. In the 2024 season, he amassed 1,747 rushing yards and scored 21 touchdowns. Notably, in a game against Fort Hamilton High School on October 12, 2024, Gamble rushed for 244 yards and scored four touchdowns, leading his team to a narrow 28-26 victory. His exceptional performances have positioned him among New York’s top high school running backs to watch. Gamble’s consistent excellence has been instrumental in Randolph Campus’s pursuit of the PSAL 3A Championship.

 

                                                                                                                   Crew Davis – Iona Prep High School                                            Crew Davis has established himself as a formidable force on the football field. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 205 pounds, Davis’s combination of size, speed, and agility has been instrumental in his team’s success. In the 2024 season, Davis led the Gaels to an 11-2 record, securing the AAA NYCHSFL title and the New York Catholic state championship. His outstanding performance earned him the MaxPreps New York High School Football Player of the Year title.  Throughout the season, he amassed 2,078 all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns, showcasing his versatility and consistent excellence. Davis has committed to the University of North Carolina, further highlighting his potential at the collegiate level.
