Top 2025 Illinois High School Quarterbacks to Watch

The 2025 Illinois high school football season is shaping up to feature some exceptional quarterback talent, with a group of rising stars set to make waves on the field. From dual-threat quarterbacks to pocket passers, Illinois is home to some of the top talents in the nation.                                               

                                                                                                   

Trae Taylor – Carmel High School                                                                As a sophomore, Trae Taylor has emerged as one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the state, boasting an impressive blend of arm strength and poise under pressure. As the leader of Carmel High School’s powered offense, Taylor has shown he can deliver in critical moments. His 2024 stats speak for themselves, with 20 touchdowns and nearly 3,000 yards through the air. With his leadership and athleticism, Taylor is quickly becoming a coveted college recruit. 

                                                                                                                     Ryne Sheppard – Maroa-Forsyth High School                                        As a junior, Ryne Sheppard’s performance at Maroa-Forsyth High School made him one of the most talked-about quarterbacks in the state. Known for his precise passing and quick decision-making, Sheppard has developed into a dual-threat signal caller. His ability to read defenses and make quick, accurate throws has been a key factor in his team’s success. With 3,331 yards and 46 touchdowns last season, Sheppard has proven he can be a game-changer whose athleticism can translate to the next level.                                                                                                                                                       

                                                                                                                            Johnny O’Brien – Fremd High School                                                        As a junior, Johnny O’Brien’s strong arm and accuracy make him one of the top quarterbacks in Illinois. At Fremd, O’Brien has built a reputation for his deep-ball accuracy and quick release, leading to a breakout season in 2024 with over 3,000 passing yards and 39 touchdowns. His ability to stretch the field has allowed Fremd to compete with some of the top programs in the state, and his upside has attracted significant attention from college recruiters.

                                                                                                                    Dane Eisenmenger – Tolono Unity High School                                     As a junior, Dane Eisenmenger has shown tremendous growth during his time at Tolono Unity. With a solid frame and an ability to make all the throws, Eisenmenger’s ability to command the pocket and work through progressions has made him a standout in the 2025 class. With 2,802 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2024, he has proven himself as a capable leader who can manage the game while making big plays when needed.

 

                                                                                                                            Kodey McKinney – St. Joseph-Ogden High School                                   As a junior, Kodey McKinneys strong arm and deep-ball accuracy have made him a dangerous quarterback for St. Joseph-Ogden. Although he’s had his fair share of growing pains, McKinney’s upside is undeniable. His 2024 season saw him post solid numbers, throwing for 2,351 yards and 29 touchdowns. McKinney could become one of the top quarterbacks in the state by his senior year.                                                                                                                    

                                                                                                                         Keller Stocks – Mt. Zion High School                                                         As a junior,  Keller Stock’s has been a consistent performer for Mt. Zion, using his strong arm and high football IQ to command the offense. While his passing stats might not be as gaudy as some of the other top quarterbacks, his leadership and clutch performances in big games have earned him respect. Stocks has the ability to make plays both through the air and on the ground, throwing for 2,877 yards and 33 touchdowns making him a versatile and dynamic quarterback.

                                                                                                                            Asa Johnson  – Aurora Christian High School                                        As a junior, Asa Johnson has emerged as a rising star for Aurora Christian, showcasing his ability to be effective both as a passer and a runner. His 2,332 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2024 were impressive, and his mobility allows him to extend plays when the pocket breaks down. Johnson is a dual-threat quarterback with great potential and one to watch closely over the next two years.
